THIS makes for a depressing game of spot the difference. These two images of Rond?nia, a state in western Brazil, show the impact of deforestation on this part of the Amazon rainforest since 1975, when the picture on the left was taken. Human activity in the area began with the construction of a main highway (orange line in left-hand image), which cut deep into the rainforest. As settlers and farmers moved in, secondary roads were built at right angles to the initial road, resulting in the distinctive fishbone pattern visible in the right-hand image, taken in 2012.

The entire process was captured by NASA’s Landsat satellites, which have been continuously monitoring Earth’s surface for the past 40 years. The stunning images generated by these eyes in the sky have allowed for a dramatically improved understanding of the way our planet works.

Some of those images were used by Compton Tucker, a biologist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and his colleague David Skole of Michigan State University in East Lansing, in a landmark study of Amazon deforestation published in 1993 (Science, doi.org/bgb6zs).

Their discoveries at first seemed paradoxical. While the rate of deforestation in Rond?nia was lower than anticipated, the impact on biodiversity was greater. Somehow, the fishbone technique was living up to its ominous name.

Skole and Tucker concluded that the spatial pattern of deforestation is as important as the size of the area affected. This was especially true in Rond?nia, where the extensive branching of roads increasingly fragmentated the rainforest, cutting organisms off from shelter and leaving them more exposed to human activity.

These images are part of a series released by NASA’s Earth Observatory to mark the 40th anniversary of the Landsat programme.

Considering the increase in home invasion and burglary incidents today, it is surprising to know that many homeowners still don?t take steps to improve their property?s security. Surprising because by not improving their home?s security systems, they put their property, loved ones and their own safety at great risk. This is the reason why it is important to setup your home?s perimeter security system. If that is the case, then how can you go about setting it up? If you don?t know your property lines yet, you have to identify them first. Check the description of your property and verify the boundary lines by walking the length of your property and visually confirming where the boundaries are. You also need to draw a diagram of your property which you must show the security system provider later.

Setting a budget for this project is the next thing you need to do. Setting a budget helps you save time and effort identifying the specific perimeter security systems you can invest in. For instance, you can determine if you have enough budget to have a PSIM system installed in your security fence or if you need to consider more affordable solutions. After setting a budget, you need to identify the type of perimeter fence you want to put up. There are many different types of security fences you can consider installing in your home, the most popular being the classic chain link fence. Depending on your preference and most importantly, budget, you can choose simple chain link security fences or the palisade fence. Another important consideration will be the type of accessories you?ll install in these fences. The most common accessories installed in fences are motion detectors with lights.

These detectors sound an alarm and flood bright lights along the fence, allowing you to see anyone trying to sneak past the security fence. There are some homeowners on the other hand that install trip wires which trigger the alarm and flood bright lights along the security fence, alerting them to intruders. If you have night vision cameras, you have to be sure they are all positioned in areas where an intruder will most likely attempt to enter the property. This way, you can be sure to capture videos of anyone trying to illegally enter your property. Lastly, invest in the top quality, shrillest, loudest alarms you can afford. These loud alarms are very effective at deterring burglars so it will be worth the extra cost in the long run.

Hands-on impressions of the near-final iPhone 5 assembly

Today at an undisclosed location in Berlin, Germany, Mobile Nations’ own Alex Dobie and Richard Devine got to see a near-final dummy unit for Apple’s next iPhone (iPhone 5,1). Here’s their report:

While the unit we saw was non-functional, we can confirm several aspects of the product’s design, as well as how iOS 6 will look on Apple’s next flagship smartphone.

Many of these are details we’ve previously reported from other sources, however today we can confirm them following hands-on time with the unit.

The iPhone 5 is approximately as wide as the current 4S, only taller, and sporting a widescreen display. There’s a smaller home button underneath, and the Home screen now sports five rows of icons on account of the extra real estate. As iMore reported earlier, there’s a new, smaller Dock connector down below, in addition to a 3.5mm headphone jack. The bottom face of the design is peppered with a large speaker grille, alongside those other components. Around the back, there’s a brushed metal rear panel decorated with a shiny Apple logo.

Essentially, it looks like every leak we’ve seen over the past several months. The pictures we’ve seen from factory leaks and other sources are an almost exact match for the device we saw today.

While nothing with Apple is ever truly final until it’s held up on stage, it does indeed look like we’re in for a widescreen iPhone with a new dock connector and a redesigned chassis in just a few weeks.

As iMore first reported, we’re expecting a Sept. 12 announcement and a launch in the first wave of countries by September 21, with the second wave to follow on or about October 5.

BEIRUT (Reuters) – Rebels seized an air defense facility and attacked a military airport in eastern Syria on Saturday, a monitoring group said, hitting back at an air force which President Bashar al-Assad is increasingly relying on to crush his opponents.

The attacks in eastern oil-producing Deir al-Zor province follow rebel strikes against military airports in the Aleppo and Idlib areas, close to the border with Turkey.

Assad, battling a 17-month-old uprising in which 20,000 people have been killed, has lost control of rural areas in northern, eastern and southern regions and has resorted to helicopter gunships and fighter jets to subdue his foes.

The aerial bombardment has driven fresh waves of refugees into neighboring countries, reviving Turkish calls for “safe zones” to be set up on Syrian territory – appeals ignored by a divided U.N. Security Council and by Western powers reluctant to commit the military forces needed to secure such zones.

Rebels in Deir al-Zor overran an air defense building, taking at least 16 captives and seizing an unknown number of anti-aircraft rockets, said Rami Abdulrahman of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Activist video posted on the internet showed the officers and soldiers captured by rebel fighters as well as an arsenal of rocket-propelled grenades and ammunition seized in the raid.

Abdulrahman said rebels also attacked the Hamdan military airbase at Albu Kamal, close to Syria’s eastern border with Iraq, but did not succeed in breaking into it.

The attacks come three days after rebels said they had damaged several helicopters at the Taftanaz air base in Idlib province. The insurgents also said they have shot down a fighter jet and a helicopter last week.

AIR STRIKES

Assad’s forces have carried out numerous air strikes on civilians in rebel-held areas. Helicopters have strafed towns with heavy machineguns, and jets have unleashed rockets and bombs against opposition strongholds.

Bombardments of northern towns such as Azaz and Anadan, of which Assad lost control weeks ago, have led to thousands of residents fleeing to safety in Turkey.

Ankara made its call for safe havens inside Syria after the U.N. refugee agency said the flow of Syrians into Turkey and Jordan – which already host more than 150,000 registered refugees – was rising sharply.

But a ministerial meeting of the Security Council produced nothing beyond a French plan to channel more aid to rebel areas, an initiative which will do nothing to stem the flow of civilians fleeing the fighting.

Turkish government sources said Ankara would again push for agreement on safe zones inside Syria at the General Assembly later this month and would try to put pressure on Russia and Iran, which strongly oppose any such action.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, a former ally of Assad, showed his frustration at the lack of international action.

“We cannot take such a measure unless the United Nations Security Council decides in favor of it … First a decision for the no-fly zone must be taken, then we would be able to take a step towards a buffer zone,” Erdogan said in an interview broadcast on Turkish television late on Friday.

“Bashar al-Assad has come to the end of his political life. At the moment, Assad is acting in Syria not as a politician, but as an element, an actor, of war,” he said.

The foreign minister of Germany which holds the rotating presidency of the U.N. Security Council for September, said his country would “not stop working on Moscow and Beijing”, two capitals which have blocked concerted action on Syria.

“We will not give up, not in this month either, not give up in pushing for a united stance at the Security Council,” German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told a news conference in Kuwait. “If we were to give up then we would be giving up on the people and that we will not do.”

Jordan said on Saturday it was “stretched to the limit” by the influx of refugees from southern Syria. The resource-poor kingdom of 7 million has accepted 70,000 registered refugees but says it is hosting 140,000 in local communities.

Planning Minister Jafaar Hassan said the influx was “reaching limits that the government cannot continue to shoulder”, estimating the cost of sheltering the refugees at $230 million this year, rising to $285 million in 2013.

RECORD DEATH TOLL

A United Nations official said 1,600 people were killed in Syria in the last week, the highest weekly figure in nearly a year and a half of conflict, and aid agencies say living conditions are worsening dramatically.

An estimated 1.2 million people are uprooted within Syria, including 150,000 in and around Damascus, the U.N. said.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he had pressed the Syrian government to allow in international aid workers, and received a positive reply during talks in Tehran this week.

Ban told Reuters he had “long and in-depth discussions with the Syrian officials” on the sidelines of a Non-Aligned Movement meeting. “While I criticized all the parties that have been depending on military means to resolve this issue, the primary responsibility rests with the Syrian government,” he said.

But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said it would be wrong to press Damascus alone to end the violence.

“It is absolutely unrealistic to say that the unilateral capitulation of one of the parties in conflict is the only way out, in a situation when there’s ongoing urban fighting,” he told students of the Moscow Institute of Foreign Relations.

Did he do it?

Are you still searching for the perfect organizing tool?
Can be your Filofax too bulky and heavy to fit in your purse and carry along with you?
Tried a Palm or other Handheld and found it awkward to work with when you?re on the run?

Ta Da!! ? Try simple 3?5 silvine record cards, you know the litle ones you employ for kitchen recipes.

Why? These are affordable, easy to find and they fit in your pocket or purse. These come in pretty colors so you can code your projects by color.
e.g. one to a family event, Work, Personal Goals, Home Projects, Hobbies/Crafts etc. Note: If you cannot find coloured ones, make use of a coloured marker to stipulate around the outer edge of the card . This is enough that will help you quickly sort them into groups if you need to.

Here are some examples of how they are utilized. (I use one per project but you can combine up to you want onto one card)

Daily List

Grocery Lists

Personal Goals ? one for weekly, daily, monthly yearly, life goals
Your daily life Mission Statement

Favourite Prayers

Listing of Books on your Wish List to buy (or those that you would like to read/look for at the library etc.)

To write down your Hot Ideas if you are on the run.

Record notes from books and meetings.

Phone Calls ? work, business, personal etc ? jot the phone number down too and that means you don?t need to look it up before you call.

Keep some blank ones in the bank, purse, car, from your bed to record dreams, ideas that wake you up during the night.
Keep a stack through the computer to keep tabs on your passwords, favourite sites and keyboard shortcuts.

Examples:

We?ve one with my Credit Card Balance and I record any new purchases onto it as I make them so i could check off the transaction when my payment arrives at month end.

Right this moment I am in the process of starting a new Bank Account i have made a list of each of the utility bills that we pay by automatic payment from the old account and that we now need to notify individuals new account data. We?ve this all on one card which enable it to check off every one as I complete it. Which has a separate card with this project, I feel organized and will see immediately, how long along I am in this process. When I complete the project, out goes the credit card.

Oh, and by the way, don?t forget to use them to record your favourite cooking recipes

I?ve a little plastic folding protection for my cards with two flaps inside that hold them from to fall out. I picked up at my stationary store and it protects my cards from getting bent and away from order in my purse. This is not necessary
as you can just pop them in a bag but it is handy for me. My daily List is always on the top so I can just flip the cover open and see my list.

I?d personally love to hear from people who already use index cards to be organized. If you try them the first time after reading this article,I?d love to hear where did they work for you.
